Joel Gold presents Suspicious Minds: How Culture Shapes Madness
In conversation with Jonathan Goldstein

Greenlight neighbor Joel Gold, a doctor at Bellevue Hospital, began to notice in 2002 an increasing number of patients suffering from what he began to call the “Truman Show Delusion” – believing that their lives were being filmed constantly and broadcast all over the world. This phenomenon launched Gold and his brother Ian, also a doctor based in Montreal, on a quest to understand the nature of this particular phenomenon, of delusions more generally, and the nature of madness itself. By exploring the major categories of delusion via fascinating case studies and marshaling the latest research in schizophrenia, the Gold brothers’ book, Suspicious Minds, reveals the role of culture and the social world in the development of psychosis. The result is a groundbreaking new direction for thinking about the interaction of the brain and the world around us. Joel Gold talks about his findings and the evolving nature of madness with Jonathan Goldstein, host of the groundbreaking CBC show WireTap.

If you've never read this book in the springtime (or at all, for that matter), what have you been doing with yourself? Pick it up this instant! I think it's one of life's great pleasures to read The Wind in the Willows while the season changes around you. Grahame's writing is equal parts whimsy and wisdom, imbued with innocence and a subtle mysticism. It's a children's tale, sure, but aren't we all children at one time or another.
