Tonight: Ig Publishing Anniversary Party!
Wednesday, May 16, 7:30 PM
Ig Publishing Ten Year Anniversary Party
Readings, live music, drinks and refreshments
Andrew Cotto, author of Outerborough Blues: A Brooklyn Mystery, introduced by Sheri Holman
Kirby Gann, author of Ghosting, introduced by John Burnham Schwartz
Christopher Narozny, author of Jonah Man, introduced by Peter McGuigan
Hosted by publishers Robert Lasner and Elizabeth Clementson
Fort Greene's own independent press Ig Publishing is celebrating ten years of publishing "original literary fiction from writers who have been overlooked by the mainstream publishing establishment, and political and cultural nonfiction with a progressive bent." Greenlight is honored to host the festivities with readings by three of Ig's current crop of writers, each introduced by a literary luminary who is a fan of their work. Andrew Cotto's Outerborough Blues, a noirish mystery set in 1990s Brooklyn, will be introduced by Fort Greene novelist Sheri Holman. Kirby Gann's genre-subverting thriller of drugs and violence, Ghosting, will be introduced by novelist John Burnham Schwartz. And Chris Narozny's whodunit set in the world of carneys and vaudeville, Jonah Man, will be introduced by literary agent Peter McGuigan. Husband and wife publishers Robert Lasner and Elizabeth Clementson will MC the evening, which will include food, beer, and a live accordion player for an Ig-style book party!

Featured Staff Pick: The Private Life of Trees
The Private Life of Trees
By Alejandro Zambra
I think of Chilean literature like a jaguar, a ferocious predator that stalks and ambushes its prey in elegant language and emotional tumult tinged by politics. Seemingly out of place then is The Private Lives of Trees, a fable about the convalescent nature of stories framed in a looming tragedy. What it lacks in ferocity it makes up for in tension, as if the jaguar allows the prey to see him. There is no ambush, but frightening possibility. (picked by Brette)

Blogger/Author Pairings:
Author Rosecrans Baldwin discusses Paris, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down with blogger Jason Diamond of Vol. 1 Brooklyn
Introduction by Ron Hogan of Beatrice.com
Our ongoing Blogger/Author Pairings series features conversations between authors and bloggers who share territories, passions, and preoccupations. Rosecrans Baldwin, editor of The Morning News and author of the novel You Lost Me There, chronicles the unexpected reality of expatriate life in his new memoir Paris, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down. Baldwin moved his family to Paris for a copywriting job and soon learned that it’s not all croissants and cathedrals; the oddities of French office life, the omnipresence of American culture, and his own inability to speak French cause Baldwin to lose his dream of Paris but find a whole new reality to fall in love with. Baldwin will discuss the book with fellow internet personality Jason Diamond, the founder of influential literary blog Vol. 1 Brooklyn and New York Deputy Editor of Flavorpill. The event will be introduced by series curator Ron Hogan, creator of the seminal literary blog Beatrice.com.

Featured Staff Pick: The Sorely Trying Day
The Sorely Trying Day
By Lillian and Russell Hoban
This dear and charming book, like all great children's literature, is both playfully hilarious and secretly profound. Read it to a small child and giggle at all the trouble the mouse, cat, dog, and variously sized children get into, while enjoying Hoban's wonderfully old fashioned illustrations. Then close it and ponder this pint-sized meditation on culpability, accountability, honesty, and sacrifice. Because everyone has a Sorely Trying Day every once in a while... (picked by Jessica)
